New EU Chemicals Policy (REACH)
REACH - Being prepared helps to identify new challenges and avoid likely risks
For the first time, a chemicals regulation affects not only the industry that manufactures and markets chemical products but also companies that use chemical substances or preparations. This is a completely new dimension for a law aimed to protect people and the environment.
In December 2006, the Council and the Parliament of the European Union passed the chemicals regulation REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals). REACH came into force on June 1, 2007. The pre-registration commitment for around 30,000 substances and their applications ended on December 1, 2008. The starting signal for the registration phase was marked by initiatives to set up consortia and Substance Information Exchange Forums (SIEF).
An early confrontation with the REACH regulation helps to uncover the new challenges and react accordingly. In doing so, all areas affected by the regulation are to be identified and brought into line in good time with the requirements set out by REACH.
The "RE(A)CHeck your Portfolio" approach by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) ensures that not only the areas of a company directly affected are prepared for the necessary changes, but also identifies the long-term consequences of REACH (supply chain management, setting up consortia etc.).
