Local roots, global commitment

Bilateral relations between Germany and Japan go back many years, and are characterised by intensive exchange and close collaboration. The close ties between these two countries – both leading industrial nations – are founded on multifaceted bonds and common fundamental values in the political, economic and social spheres.

German-Japanese economic ties are particularly close. Germany remains Japan’s biggest trade partner in Europe, while Japan was Germany’s most important trade partner in the Asia-Pacific region for many years. Japan is an important target for German investment, and Germany is a key target for Japanese investment in Europe. The EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, a free trade deal which came into effect on 1 February 2019, simplifies market access in both directions.
