PwC’s spin-off provides a gaming and esports platform for employer branding, recruiting and digital corporate culture / PwC facilitates intrapreneurship and innovative culture among employees

Frankfurt, 3 April 2023

The audit and consulting firm PwC Germany is financing its first spin-off company, The metagame AI GmbH (metagame), a gaming and esports platform that brings together talented professionals and employers.

With its solution, metagame is targeting a problem that companies of all sizes are facing: the “war for talent”, i.e. the increasing competition for highly skilled recruits and specialists. The start-up uses the global digital trends of gaming and esports to reach, evaluate, attract and ultimately retain the desired talent.

PwC Germany supports development of innovative business models

With its venture-building approach, PwC creates a framework for consolidating innovative ideas within the firm, developing them into business cases and ultimately producing market-ready solutions. All employees can participate in the innovation process and develop and submit ideas. In this way, PwC promotes an entrepreneurial spirit and innovative culture among its employees. PwC employees have the opportunity to present their ideas in order to either obtain investment from PwC and thus establish their own company or to collaborate with PwC after founding their own startup. PwC thereby provides an attractive opportunity for intrapreneurs to become the founders of new spin-off companies.

“At PwC, we believe in venture building as a structured approach to building and growing new startups. Our Corporate Development and Innovation team follows a systematic process to constantly find and validate new business models and, as was the case with metagame, subsequently give our colleagues the opportunity to establish their own companies in order to bring their ideas to market.”

Gaming and esports platform in the “war for talent”

metagame seeks to develop a platform that attracts talented recruits and professionals through authentic gaming and esports features, such as tournaments and leagues. metagame thus engages such individuals in a familiar social environment and at the same time creates a matchmaking situation between professionals and companies. As a technology and consulting firm as well as an agency service, metagame is thus filling a gap in the market between the fields of gaming, esports and human resources (HR).

The idea for metagame came from two former PwC employees, Pia Büßecker and Gian Luca Vitale, who had already been running esports formats for companies for several years. As co-founders, they have now taken over the management of the new start-up together with Matthias Ruhland and Prof. Dr Tobias Scholz and are building up the business. metagame acts completely independently within the market, both legally and operationally.
